About
The current Presidential Palace of the Republic of Lithuania, which is located in the heart of Vilnius Old Town, performs a very important national representational function. The palace commemorates many centuries, from the 16th-century Goštautas Palace to the present-day Presidential Palace of the Republic of Lithuania.
Over the years, the building has undergone 13 renovations to give it its current function and appearance. Research testifies to the history of the palace’s transformation, to which the historical personalities who have resided in the palace, such as Napoleon Bonaparte, Mikhail Kutuzov, Alexander I, and Mikhail Muravyov, also contribute.
The palace, together with the guardhouse, the Centre for Civil Education, the courtyard and the park, form a single representative complex. The building, which serves as the Presidential Palace, is a magnificent piece of Late Classical (Empire) architecture, featuring a perfectly symmetrical layout and rich decoration. In order to achieve a perfect architectural expression, simulated windows and other non-functional details have been incorporated to underline the architectural uniqueness of this building.
In adapting the palace to the institution of the President, the historic interior of the ceremonial halls has been restored, the splendour of which evokes the aura of the old palace and recalls a magnificent history full of change.
