About
The Lithuanian National Drama Theatre is a building that has been pieced together from numerous fragments and has undergone many repairs and reconstructions, but has successfully remained what it started out as back in 1951, always playing the role of a cultural space.
The Nasvyčiai brothers undertook the reconstruction of the early 20th-century premises – the former hall of the Liutnia Music Society. When the new Drama Theatre opened its doors in 1981, many were surprised by the restrained interior. Taking into account the scale of the environment, the authors abandoned the then typical view of theatre as an urban landmark. The concise, recessed façade features an expressive highlight that has become a symbol of the theatre – Stanislovas Kuzma’s sculptural composition Mūzų šventė (Muse Festival) in forged brass.
Moderation and contextuality are felt not only in the main façade, but also in the inner spaces of the theatre.
“Modernist projects, otherwise known as the ‘international style’, were sensitively and distinctively inserted into the existing urban situation, and the interior space was constructed with the impression of a free-flowing space,” architect Vytautas Nasvytis shared about his memories of the work.
The reconstruction of the building, completed in 2021, aimed to meet today’s needs while at the same time successfully representing the building, which was declared an architectural monument back in 1993.
