About
The interwar residential house with the apartments of Vincas Krėvė-Mickevičius and Vincas Mykolaitis-Putinas is an example of interwar modernist architecture in Vilnius, representing a unique rationalist style. From the outside, such functional architecture often looks like a combination of simple and undecorated cubes and rectangles, and the inside of the house also lacks decorative elements, only including as much as is “necessary for the home”. The building’s uniqueness lies in the style itself, which is not encountered often in Vilnius.
The building has been designed to be as functional as possible for interwar apartments intended for rent, which have been occupied since 1940 by many prominent Lithuanian and non-Lithuanian personalities: Vincas Krėvė-Mickevičius, Balys Sruoga, Vincas Mykolaitis-Putinas, Mykolas Biržiška, historian Konstantinas Jablonskis, Vytautas Landsbergis-Žemkalnis, Georges Matore, dissident Eitan Finkelstein, Nobel Peace Prize laureate and human rights activist Andrei Sakharov, etc.
The building currently houses two memorial apartments-museums: the apartments of Vincas Krėvė-Mickevičius and Vincas Mykolaitis-Putinas, which have authentic interiors with preserved functional furniture and objects of the residents.
The building, located at the foot of Taurus Hill, is a typical example of the interwar period, reflecting the architectural fashions, the political situation and the quality of life of the time.
