About
On the approaches to Taurus Hill, a late modernist nugget of broken plan and sophisticated form is cleverly incorporated into the complex terrain of the slope. The architect of the building, Vytautas Edmundas Čekanauskas, is one of the most famous Lithuanian architects of the 20th century, having designed the Lazdynai district, the Government Palace and other buildings.
The aesthetics of the façade are created by the sleek staircases and the paired narrow window strips that vertically divide the almost blind rectangles. On a sloping trapezoidal site, the architect had to design a building that is as much as 9 metres too high, so that when walking along the building’s straight corridors, a strange feeling of “teleportation“ can be experienced where the third floor is suddenly reached from the ground floor.
The exterior emphasises the architectural rhythm – the repetition of large planes and volumes, while the L-shaped shells allow visitors to visually reduce the length of the building.
The building is adorned with stained-glass windows created by artist Algirdas Dovydėnas and the 240 m2 fresco “Our Land”, which has been included in the Register of Cultural Property, and which has been the subject of a number of video clips and scenes in movies. The building also still houses an authentic cinema equipment room with film projectors made in the USSR in 1971.
