About
The National M. K. Čiurlionis School of Art complex combines a dormitory, a main building and a modern dance theatre. The combination of architecture from different eras creates a unique environment for young creatives to grow and develop.
The reconstructed Soviet dormitory of the M. K. Čiurlionis School of Art, which has been pulled away from the main street of Antakalnis, now not only provides a quality home for young artists, but also reveals how architecture fosters interconnectedness between children by linking other buildings in the complex.
The architectural and interior design is also considered to be unusual for an ordinary dormitory: the silhouette of the pitched, broken roofs is visible from the outside, and the interior spaces are free of the usual small, dark rooms and long, awkward corridors. On the contrary, the interior is bright and cosy, with small amphitheatres and terraces erected in the centre of the building.
During the reconstruction, the architects’ idea of framing the views of Vilnius in the windows of the children’s rooms like paintings, acting as a source of creative inspiration, was turned into reality. The whole school ensemble subtly combines and interacts with contemporary, Soviet-era and historical architecture and interior details, and the Vilnius skyline can be viewed from an unprecedented angle directly on the roof of the dormitory.
