Vilnius University Library Scholarly Communication and Information Centre (SCIC)
About
Nestled in the pine forest of Vilnius’ Saulėtekis Valley, and alongside a decade-old student footpath, the SCIC – Scientific Communications and Information Center – has “grown”. To locals it is better known simply as the Vilnius University Library.
The architecture of the building – with its expressive forms and not a single straight wall – continues to impress with its modern and unconventional design. The library’s expression organically combines both contemporary technological solutions and the harmony of traditional values. The original yet unpretentious expression of the building is a solid yet harmonious volume in its environment.
Visitors are greeted by a modest rectangular amphitheater-square. A glazed hall space extends the space of the square. The first floor of the building serves as a central circulation space that connects the three volumes. The smallest of the three volumes houses the administration, while the other two house reading rooms.
The composition of the three volumes harmoniously blends into the pine forest. The natural environment of the library is one of the greatest values of this building. The views seen through the huge windows become almost part of the interior, and natural light floods the interior spaces.
Numerous open bookshelves, a democratic atmosphere, and a 24 hour building – this is the answer to the question of what a modern library can be, where it’s good to be and where inspiration for learning arises.
