Vilnius Palace of Concert and Sports
About
Built in 1971, the palace completed the sports complex on the right bank of the Neris River. Rising next to the Žalgiris Stadium and indoor and outdoor swimming pools, the Palace of Concert and Sports became not only the focal point of this complex but of the entire city.
It is the building that reflects the trends of the Brutalist style in Lithuania best. The main element of the building is the innovative cable-stayed roof construction of the hall. Like a wave with its crest directed towards the Castle Hill, this unique construction distinguished this palace from other typical projects of that time, and for the original cable-stayed roof construction, the chief engineer was awarded the title of meritorious engineer.
The dynamic silhouette, the combination of reinforced concrete and glass reflect the spirit of modern architecture of the 1960s and 1970s. The interior of the building is no less impressive – a large wooden panel of wavy wooden strips is built in the wall of the foyer. There is an unconventional combination of white-painted wood and reinforced concrete in the main hall.
The Vilnius Palace of Concert and Sports is one of the most exceptional architectural creations in Vilnius. The building is not only recognizable in Lithuania but also became a symbol of the capital’s panorama.
