Hotel Grata
About
Hotel Grata is one of the first private hotels to emerge in independent Lithuania, continuing its tradition of hospitality to this day. Designed at the end of the 20th century, the hotel is a striking reflection of the postmodernism of the time, distinguished by an ideological revolution in creative fields.
The architects designed the building with a particular architectural language – decorative, staggered geometric shapes (circle, square, triangle), bright colours on the exterior and interior, stamped geometric patterns in the façade grid, a variety of finishing materials (to the extent possible, taking into consideration the conditions of the time), elaborate compositions made of small volumes, and the use of a vivid, and at times shocking, palette.
With complete creative freedom, the architects have made the corner of A. Vivulskio and Vytenio Streets a prominent landmark by designing a hotel here, ideally illuminated by the aesthetics of postmodernism. This corner was previously burdened by the history of the church, designed by Antanas Vivulskis, which had stood nearby and was destroyed.
Grata, a hotel that is charming in its period authenticity and invites one to explore the architecture of postmodernism, does not pretend to perfection, interpreting classical principles and elements in an ironic way, but is characterised by the intense dramaturgy of the visitor experience.
