About Open House Vilnius

Open House Vilnius

Open House Vilnius, organized by Architektūros fondas, features open architecture weekends in Vilnius. Since 2015, architecturally important buildings open their doors to the general public and tours are led by volunteer guides, architects, or building representatives. Open House Vilnius is a member of the Open House Worldwide international network.

International Open House network

The history of Open House began decades ago. The first festival of architecture was held in 1992 in London. The event attracted a lot of interest and quickly became popular all over the world. Open House Weekend is currently held annually in more than forty cities around the world: Buenos Aires, Mexico, Chicago, Lisbon, Tallinn, Gdansk, Taipei, Seoul and more.

All Open House organizations were united in 2010. The international network Open House Worldwide was established in 2006. The common goal is to involve the public in talking about the quality of architecture and the environment, and to create a unique opportunity for people to understand and learn about buildings and spaces.

“Quality buildings and public spaces are inseparable from the creation and maintenance of vibrant cities. Open House is an opportunity for the general public to learn more, engage in dialogue, and critique architecture.”

– Victoria Thornton, was the first to conceptualize the Open House idea

Open House Worldwide took place virtually for the first time in 2020. The festival lasted uninterrupted for 48 hours throughout the weekend. It presented programs in more than 40 cities. Open House Vilnius participated in the Heritage category and presented an international audience with four examples of late modernism in Vilnius: the Composers’ Union building and its residential quarter, the Lithuanian Cooperative Union administrative building, the Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theater and the Parliament of the Republic of Lithuania. The narratives were supplemented by clips from the project “Dance Plus City”.
