About

A modern architectural building, the Vilnius Pilaitė Gymnasium has been designed in the neighbourhood of western Vilnius, where it harmoniously blends into the urban fabric of the district. The design of the school was aimed at creating a facility that could become a centre of attraction for the district’s community. Therefore, the approach was to create an urban, accessible, safe and open environment, not only for pupils, but also for the community of residents. This helped create outdoor public spaces, which can be used by the community to create a vibrant centre for the neighbourhood.

The compact rectangular volume of the building consists of a core of common spaces: the hall, auditorium and sports hall, and a ring of classrooms surrounding it. The spaces that best represent the building include the amphitheatre, which is intended for interaction between pupils, teachers, parents and the community, and the sports hall, which is not enclosed and can be seen through the windows from the corridors and classrooms, and whose roof has been turned into a terrace.

The facility implements the “classroom without walls” concept, with plenty of transparent spaces that encourage collaboration and create a safe and welcoming environment. This modern architectural work reflects contextuality, functionality and modernity, acting as the centre of the district where the pupils and the community use its spaces to create the district’s vibrant aura.
