HOTEL “GRATA”
Authors
ARCHITEKTAI - Gytis Ramunis, Artūras Asauskas, Kęstutis Kisielius, Kęstutis Pempė, 1992–1998 m.
About
• The Grata Hotel is an authentic example of postmodernism that usually evokes dramatic reactions from its visitors;• The building features many highly visible and recurring elements of classical architecture: columns, cornices. There is an abundance of various shapes, but the colors have been successfully muted;
• The bright, unheated atrium was considered a technological innovation at the time it was built;
• The client allowed the architects complete freedom in their design and used most of their ideas;
• Since the building is currently awaiting reconstruction, this tour is one of the last chances to see the building as it was originally conceived by the architects;
• During the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the Grata Hotel provided a safe haven for a significant number of Ukrainian refugees. Upon leaving the hotel, they would find themselves right in front of the only Ukrainian art gallery in Lithuania – TSEKH – which is also opening its doors at this year’s ODV event.
