THE MINISTRY OF NATIONAL DEFENCE
Authors
ARCHITEKTĖ – Elena Nijolė Bučiūtė, 1997 m.
About
• The building of the Chancellery of the Lithuanian Armed Forces of the Ministry of National Defense, designed by Nijolė Elena Bučiūtė, combines the architectural features of both Postmodernism and old Vilnius. It also shows the remains of the 14th and 15th century Old Town buildings;• Due to the discovered remains of Gothic houses, the building was redesigned several times;
• The author’s story is unique: in her time, she stood out not only for her work, but also as a female architect and professor;
• The architect paid tribute to the Old Town: on the facade of the building, she clearly emphasized four Gothic house fragments, found during archaeological excavations. Now looking at the building from St. Ignotas Street, one can see the contours of 3 Gothic houses, and the fourth one hangs above the beginning of Totorių Street.
• If you keep a close eye on the interior and the exterior of the building, you can see crescents. Do you know what they symbolize?;
• During OHV, you will have a unique opportunity to enter the Ministry of National Defense space, which is normally closed to the public, and to view the Postmodernist interior decorated with playful lines.
