About

Hales market is the oldest functioning market in Vilnius, and its beginnings trace back to the 15th century. Even before the current Hales market, there was a horse and wheat market at this location, which was called Basokai market. The market satisfied all the domestic needs of the time: horses, wheat, food and household items. Unfortunately, the densely built and messy pavilions of the market were ruining the look of the city. That is why the leader of the city at the time, decided to build a new pavilion and that is how in 1906, the current Hales market building, designed by Vaclovas Michnevičius, saw the light of day. This project stood out from the rest with its steel, reinforced concrete constructions, which were cheaper and therefore helped win the contest. Interestingly, V. Michnevičius designed Hales market after being inspired by the recently built Eifel Tower in Paris. Its metal trusses and complicated arcs are the only such example in the 20th century Lithuania. The market was also famous due to its at-the-time modern engineering choices.
