This was the first Estonian embassy to be built abroad after the restoration of independence in 1991. The project won an architectural competition that was held in 1996. At that time, Lithuanian architecture was based on the rich details of the facade, long side walls and other principles of post-modernism style. This project by the young Estonian team of “3+1 architects” surprised many with its calm modern Scandinavian appearance and technological innovations.
The construction of the embassy was completed in the year 1998, and in 1999 it was nominated for the international Mies van der Rohe Architectural Award.
