About

The administrative building of laboratory of the VU Kairėnai Botanical Garden is an exceptional example of green architecture in Lithuania. Starting as a silicate-brick apartment building, constructed during Soviet times, it was reborn as a building for plants, becoming not only a harmonious part of the Botanical Garden, but also a mesmerising exhibit. The compact space fascinates visitors with its versatility, as well as its variety of construction and technical solutions. The southern wall features a transparent greenhouse for plant micro-propagation and research; while the main part of the building is dedicated to educational activities and laboratories; and the entire building itself is surrounded by green columns. This unique building with green vertical columns was both a challenge and an experiment with the aim of making the building green all year round – which was never attempted in Lithuania before. The crown of the building is the green observation deck on the roof, offering breath-taking views of the growing labyrinth and the Botanical Garden.
