18. Office building of cooperative union of Lithuania

The Vilnius Academy of Arts building is situated on a slope and greets visitors with the burble of the Vilnelė, and once you open its doors, it speaks in symbols, colours and an unusual diffusion of light. This building became a daunting challenge for its architects – the conditions were dictated by the complex terrain and the position of the government at that time.
Built in the early 1980s, the building blends contextually into the environment and is charming for its unexpected postmodern solutions and high-tech elements. Chief architect Vytautas Brėdikis thought of everything – from the unbroken bends of the handrails to the colour of the ceiling – each detail has its own meaning.
