When in 1981 Drama Theatre opened its doors many people were astonished by a calm, moderate, and modest interior. Authors refused to make it dominant and chose a different approach adjusting it to the scale of the city. Theatre stands out with a recessed main entrance from the street, which continues to the lobby. It has a hight difference only of one step from the sidewalk level. Forged brass sculpture “Festival of muses“ by Stanislovas Kuzma is the only expressive accent over the entrance, which has become the main symbol of the theater.
Moderation, peace and context are felt not only looking at the main facade but also by internal spaces of the theater. Restrained composition, simplicity of details and decorative elements are not to astonish but to concentrate attention, gradually prepare for the performance.
“Projects of modernism, which is also known as international style were sensitively and individually inserted into the existing urban environment and the internal space was constructed to create an impression of a free space.” – these are memories of one of the architect V. Nasvytis.
