The Vilnius Culture, Recreation and Sports Hall opened in 1982. The architect, Algimantas Mačiulis, designed this building in the spirit of late modernism, which in a broader context makes a bold counterpoint to the Church of St Peter and St Paul on the other side of the river. The Hall has had a colourful history, and played its part in what would become the Lithuanian Independence movement – namely, by hosting the rock festival Lithuanika.
