Despite being located far from the railway station, the studio of the sculptor Gedimins Jokūbonis (1927–2006) has access to a railway. Yet, these rails were used not by trains, but rather were used by sculptures of Adomas Mickevičius of Vilnius and Maironis of Kaunas… Exceeding the impressive door of the building by their majesty and dimensions, these impressive works left the studio to travel to the locations, where they are standing to this day.
The object of modern architecture, designed by the architect Jaunutis Makariūnas, was built especially for Gediminas Jokūbonis in 1962–1963, according to an order from the Art Fund. The sculpture studio, built more than 50 years ago, continues to impress visitors with its original and modern architectural solutions – the round space of the studio is covered by a glass roof, resulting in an inspiring source of light for the creative interior.
You can learn about the sculptures of Gediminas Jokūbonis by simply taking a walk in the city, but an opportunity to walk on the rails that they travelled on, or to experience your own sculptural form, is possible during the Open House Vilnius weekend.
